The Chloroplast (9/21-9/28)

http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_chloroplast.html Summary: In class we started a project about cells.  Our task was to learn about the part of the cell that we were  assigned   to  and write a WANTED poster about it.  Each table group was assigned a part of a cell.   ( Mitochondria,  Cytoplasm,  Cell W all etc).    My group got the chloroplast.   We started with organizing the group roles.   Then we all shared a Google document and started collecting ideas for what we were going to write about.    I learned that the chloroplast is very important because it makes food for the cell. This process is called photosynthesis. The energy from the sun hits the chloroplast and the chloroplast uses carbon dioxide and water to make the sugars that the cells can use to live. The chloroplast uses the chlorophyll during the process. Plants are green because of a pigment called chlorop...

Cells 9/14-9/21

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(biology) Summary           This week we are learning about cells. Cells are fun to study! We watched Bill Nye the science guy talk about cells. We were answering a few questions about cells while listening to Bill. Now I will tell you a few things that I learned.                                   Cells are really important. Without cells you would not be alive. They are in all living things. They are in humans, animals, and plants. Cells come in all different shapes and sizes. There are a lot of different cells in your body. Each cell has a different job.            Now that you know that cells make up all living things don't make this mistake. You might think that a sugar cube is made out of cells because it came from sugar cane. Sugar cane is made of cells, but a sugar cube is made of atoms. A sug...

Letter to the California board of Education 9/7-9/14

http://mrsreeve501.weebly.com/science.html Summary: In class Miss J. told us that the California  Board of Education decided that science does not have to be taught in schools anymore. She said that she needs our help to explain to them why we need science. There are two ways that we could do this. We could either draw four pictures showing how important science is, or we could write 5 paragraphs about why we need science.  I decided to write 5 paragraphs because I prefer to write than draw for homework. Miss J. gave us paragraph organizers, so it is easier to write the letter to the California Board of Education. I am almost done writing my letter to them. The three reasons that I decided to write about are  that science has gotten us to where we are today, we could use science to make the world a better place, and science gives us great explanations. I hope that the California Board of Education will read my letter and will keep science in classrooms. ...

The ACE Strategy 8/24-8/29

http://www.slideshare.net/cynthiamedina733/ace-strategy Summary:         Last week we were learning about the ace strategy: Answer, Cite, and Explain. The ace strategy gives you tips on how to correctly answer a question. When you A nswer the question, make sure that you are completely answering all parts of it. Use key words from the questions in the responses. For example, if someone asks you what food is poisonous to dogs, you could say:  "Chocolate is one of the foods that is poisonous to dogs." C ite evidence from a book, and article or any other source that you used, to come up with the response, so you are not guessing. For example: "In my book, it said that Chocolate is very toxic to dogs." When you E xplain, extend your response by explaining the connection between the information that you cited and the answer. For example:   "Chocolate is very toxic to dogs, so they could die after eating a lot of it. I think that the ACE...
