Scientific Method Cartoon Project Blog (9/5-9/9)

About The Project:
In class, we were assigned to create a scientific method cartoon. This cartoon would show each step of the scientific method. It had to be hand-drawn, colored in, and as neat as you could possibly make it. Each step would have a caption that describes what is happening on each image. This is a project that we did as a scientific method refresher.
Summary:
This week in science we were making scientific method cartoons. I learned that there are many ways each step in the scientific method in performed. I looked around and everybody had different images for each step, though all of them made sense. These are the steps of the scientific method:
- Problem
- Research
- Hypothesis
- Observe or observation
- Experiment
- Analyze data or data analysis
- Communicate your results
- Conclusion
Backward-Looking
How much did you know about the subject before we started?
Before we started doing the scientific method refresher or cartoons, I did know about the scientific method from last year. I thought that all of the steps have to be in order, as precise as a butterfly life cycle. This is not true at all because sometimes you have to go back to the steps, and perform them in a different way. What I did not know is how important each step of the scientific method is, and the different ways they are performed.
Inward-Looking
How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like? Dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece or work?
I feel like I could have done a better job on this piece of work. I worked on some of it at home because I knew I would not have enough time, but even then, I could not add the captions for each of the cartoon drawings. The piece of paper that I used was too small, so I had to attach a piece of paper on the top for my title and name.
I liked this project because it forces the students to take a closer look at the scientific method, and so they can reflect on the experiments that we did in class. I also liked how it involved art, and drawing cartoons because it makes learning funner.
Outward-Looking
Did you do your work the way other people did theirs? In what ways did you do it differently? In what ways was your work or process similar?
In some ways I did do the project the similar to my classmates. We both organized the boxes accordingly, and we drew some of the steps of the scientific method similar. However, for most of the boxes we had completely different ideas. Each person had a reason behind why they chose to draw a square a different way. For example, on the step for research, most people did a person researching on a computer, but I did a person in a library reading a book. I chose this because I love 20th century tools such as researching through reading.
Forward-Looking
What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?
If I could do this piece over again, then I would definitely make a schedule so I know what parts of the project I would be working on what days. I would do this, because on the last day I felt rushed, and that I had not put enough effort into this piece.
I would also get a piece of cardboard, or a bigger piece of paper as my base so there is more space, and so I am not squishing everything together. This would also be good because then I would have a place to put captions, and a title with my name.
Another thing I would do is put more effort into this project. I would take more time drawing the cartoons, and I would make a catchy title. I would make it well organized, and easy to read. Maybe I could also make it funny so it is more interesting to read.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I liked this project, but there are a few changes I could make that I will work on in later projects. This was a good project to do for a refresher of the scientific method, because it made you think about different examples of how the steps would work if you were to do the scientific method. It is also encouraging students to try out the scientific method, following each of the steps.
