Molybdenum 2/22-2/26

Link

Summary:

This week in class we were learning about elements of the periodic table. To learn more about this topic we are making a baby book about the element that we chose. The element that I picked was Molybdenum. I decided on this element because the symbol (Mo) is the first, and last letter of my whole name. We are making this baby book on google slides.

The name Molybdenum means "lead" in Greek. This is because many people confused molybdenum with lead.
It is the 42nd element in the periodic table. This mean that there are 42 protons in the atoms that are in molybdenum. Each element has a different number. That is why it is a "special" number.
Molybdenum is used in aircraft and missile parts. Astronauts discovered molybdenum on the moon!

Baby Book

The first slide of my baby book was the birth certificate which included the name, nickname, discover date, atomic mass, atomic number, and some more.

Here is the information that I put in the birth certificate:

  • Name (of the Element): Molybdenum
  • Nickname (symbol): Mo
  • Birth Date (date element was discovered): 1778
  • Birth Weight (atomic mass): 95.94 u ± 0.02 u
  • Birth Height (atomic number): 42
  • Race (type of element): transition metals
  • Doctor (discoverer): Carl Wilhelm Scheele
  • Gender (state of matter at room temperature): Solid
  • Place of Birth (place discovered): Sweden
  • Personality (boiling point & melting point): Melting Point: 2896 K (2623°C or 4753°F), Boiling Point: 4912 K (4639°C or 8382°F)

Baby Picture

On the next slide of the baby book there was a baby picture. We put a picture of a baby, and on it's shirt was this information:

  • Protons : 42
  • Neutrons: 54
  • Electrons : 42
We also added a periodic table block:

Family Tree

On the slide after that we made a Family tree. On this tree we had the family name and the group that it belongs to.

Family name: transition metal

Group: 6

Elements in that group:

  • Chromium
  • Molybdenum
  • Tungsten
  • Seaborgium

Conclusion

I hope you learned something from the information presented. If you want to see my baby book, then here is the link (only people with oak grove email can see it.) When I started this project all I knew that the symbol (Mo) matched my name. This was because Molybdenum is not one of the well-known elements such as oxygen, and hydrogen. After all the research that I have done, now I know a lot about Molybdenum.
