Charity Fair Project Blog (12/17 - 12/21)

This is our charity fair poster

About the Project

Every year, adventure hosts a charity fair, in which the students select a charity and then sell products that relate to the cause and the charity. During this project, there are many assignments that are required for each class. For example, in history, we did research on our charity and in electives, we created our how-to. Each group presents and the top group from each class then continues to finals, where they present to Student Council, and the best presentation is chosen.

Summary

During this charity fair project, I learned a lot about our charity and what they are passionate about. The Children’s Defense Fund makes sure every child can reach their full potential. They guide, and support kids that need special treatment. Their goal is to create a loving atmosphere where children can learn and grow. One of the major issues they are trying to address is kids who have experienced school shootings. They also want to focus on kids with poor families or disabilities. With the donated money, the Children’s Defense Fund campaigns for policies and programs to improve life for children in America. According to their website, they seek to ‘end child poverty, give every child a healthy start, a quality early childhood experience, a level education playing field, and safe families and communities free from violence—with special attention to children involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.’ They raise awareness, gather and analyze data, publish reports and research.

Backward-Looking

Have you done a similar kind of work in the past (earlier in the year or in a previous grade; in school or out of school)?

I have done a similar kind of work in the past, as charity fair is an annual tradition at AdVENTURE. This year was my fourth year doing charity fair. Doing charity fair every year is a great experience because it allows you to see how you grow and how your work changes throughout your four years here. However, charity fair has changed quite a bit since my first time doing it as a fifth grader. Since we started doing charity fair, many of the assignments have changed. For example, the carbon footprint originated as simply a worksheet, and now we make google maps that show the transportation of our materials. Overall, the main purpose of charity fair is the same, however, some of the assignments for charity fair have changed over the years.

Inward-Looking

How do you feel about this piece of work? What parts of it do you particularly like? Dislike? Why? What did/do you enjoy about this piece or work?

I feel pretty good about this year's charity fair. I felt that our group worked together well and was successful in making and selling our products, During charity fair, I liked that our crafts were fully handmade and allowed us to get creative. There is nothing I dislike about charity fair, as I think it was a great experience this year. However, I felt that we were rushing during parts of the project, so I think it would be better if we started working on charity fair earlier. Overall, I feel that charity fair was a success this year, and there is nothing I would change.

Outward-Looking

Did you do your work the way other people did theirs? In what ways did you do it differently? In what ways was your work or process similar?

I feel that charity fair allows groups to be creative and gives us a lot of freedom. Thus, our work was different from the way that other charity groups did theirs. For example, groups were allowed to chose their charity and product, This allowed each group to get creative and gave us a lot of freedom, However, some of the factors of charity fair, such as the process, was similar between groups. Overall, I feel that charity fair is very creative and gives us a lot of freedom, meaning that each group has a very different final result. However, some of the process was similar between groups.

Forward-Looking

What would you change if you had a chance to do this piece over again?

If I had a chance to do this piece over again, there is not much I would change. I felt that our group did a great job on this project and that we worked together well. If I had to change something, I would start working on a charity fair earlier and plan our time better. That way, we would not be rushing towards the due date. Overall, I felt that our group did a great job during charity fair. There is not much that I would change, however, it would be better if our group started working on the project earlier so that we were not rushing.
