 Summary:

Urban Environmental Accords are acts that a city must follow. These accords help the environment and community in many different ways. There are 21 different actions that fall under 7 different categories; energy, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, environmental health, and water. These actions help create an Urban environment and community in a specific area.

Energy

The first category is energy. This category talks about ways to save and reduce the amount of energy that we use. The first environmental accord is telling us that in the next seven years, cities will increase the use of renewable energy to produce electricity. This is important because renewable energy is better for the environment and pollutes the Earth less. In the next seven years, we will also reduce electricity used by ten percent. This is important so that we can save electricity and reduce pollution which can cause greenhouse gasses. We will also start a plan that reduces emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and helps control greenhouse gas emissions. This is important so that we can control greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming.

Waste Reduction

The next category is waste reduction, which is the amount of waste that we reduce. The first action in this category means to starts a law which decreases the amount of waste that goes to landfills by 2040. This environmental accord matters because waste in landfills causes greenhouse gasses, and we want to reduce that amount. In the next seven years, reduce the use of disposable, toxic, or nonrenewable products at least 50 percent.

Urban Design and Nature

Urban Design has environmental accords that make sure that streets are safe and disabled-accessible, makes sure that new buildings will be built with a new building standard, and start a program that creates jobs for people that are in low-income neighborhoods or poorer areas. Urban nature makes sure that the environment is safe and healthy. It makes sure that there are enough accessible parks in the neighborhood, maintains that there is enough greenery in a specific area and that habitats remain safe and protected from building and other dangers.

Transportation

The transportation category makes sure that the transportation is a specific area is accessible, safe, and affordable. It also has accords which tell us that cars should be made, which produce less harmful gasses into the environment. Also, to reduce the amount of car trips by only one person. This is important so that transportation in a city is easy to use and safe.

Environmental Health and Water

Environmental health ensures that the community and environment are healthy and that there is nothing harmful in the environment. One of the accords says to identify one harmful product every year and stop using it. It also says to promote public health by serving locally grown and organic food. Also, to measure the air pollution and set a goal to reduce that amount. The last category of the environmental accords is water. This ensures that a city has safe drinking water and that cities don't waste the amount of drinking water in a specific area. It also makes sure that safe drinking water sources are protected. This is important so that every city has safe drinking water which is not wasted.

SP8: Obtain, evaluate and communicate information

This week, we obtained, evaluated, and communicated information. We learned about Urban Environmental Accords and why they are important. We evaluated this information by taking notes and saying what each environmental accord means and matters. We communicated this information in class and with our partners as we talked about what each accord means and why it matters. This helped us understand more about Urban Environmental Accords and what they mean.
