WAC - Is It Healthier to be a Vegetarian or an Omnivore?

There is a lot of discussion and debate about which is healthier: A vegetarian, or an omnivore? There are pros and cons about each side which makes it a hard decision. We did research in class, and after a lot of thought, I agree that omnivores are healthier than vegetarians, and have more advantages. It is good to have both in your diet because meat is good to have once in awhile, and veggies are very healthy.

Meat is good because it is high in protein, nutrients, and vitamins. These are all very important factors of a meal, and are the easiest to find in meat. In the first article we read, called "Is it healthier to be a vegetarian or an omnivore?" I learned that meat also contains vitamin B12 that mostly comes from animal origin and helps protect the brain, and nerves.

Even though there are good sides to eating meat, there are also a few bad sides. According to what the third article we read, named "Should people become vegetarians?"  It said that meat increases the risk of getting type 2 diabetes. This is when your blood glucose levels rise higher than normal. This article also mentioned that diets very high in animal protein cause the body to excrete (or give off) calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, which are the main components of kidney stones and gallstones.

You have probably heard of the saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." This means that nutrition will make you healthier, and when you are healthy, you don't have to go to the doctor. Vegetables and fruits are good for you. Vegetables are low in fat, and are very good sources for nutrients. They also provide a more healthful form of iron then you would get from eating meat. Fruits, when high in potassium contains a healthy blood pressure. They also may protect against certain types of cancer, and some may reduce the risk of heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

As there are bad sides to meat, there are also some bad sides to being a vegetarian. Being a vegetarian means you are missing out on all protein, minerals, vitamins and more that comes from meat. Without that, you would need to try extra hard, and make sure that you are eating protein, nutrients and animal products such as eggs, fish or other dairy products.

You could argue that vegetarians are healthier and safer when it comes to food, but that is not always true. According to the third article we read, when you are a vegetarian, you do not get the adequate (or good quality) levels of all the essential amino acids in a serving. Amino acids are the building blocks for your tissues, and are very important to health. You would also need to try extra hard to get all of the required proteins. When you are a vegetarian, you loose nutrients that promote good brain health which is very important.

In conclusion, those are some of the reasons why I think it is healthier to be an omnivore. Meat is not good for you if you have a lot of it, but when you have just a little bit every week, then it is good for you. Meat and Vegetables are both good for you, and it is good to have a big variety of foods. Which do you think is healthier: a vegetarian, or an omnivore?
