Cell Organelles (9/19-9/23)

Summary:

This week I learned that all of the cell organelles are important to the cell and that there is not only one organelle that is important. Each organelle does something good, but there is also always a negative side of each organelle. All of the organelles depend on each other to be able to do their job. In other words, one organelle would not be able to keep the body alive without the other organelle.

Lets take a cell membrane, for example. The cell membrane depends on the endoplasmic reticulum to transport proteins for the cell. As another example, the cell membrane works with the cell wall to allow molecules and other substances to enter and leave the cell.

Each organelle has a job that it needs to do for the cell, and some other organelles to work. For example, the cell membranes job is to protect all of the organelles that are inside of the cell. Without the cell membrane, the other organelles would not be safe, so they could not do their jobs.

Every organelle can do something bad when things go wrong. There is not just one organelle that carries diseases.

For example, the cell membrane can have a disease called cystic fibrosis. This disease causes for the cell to produce less water. When this happens in the lungs, it makes your saliva become really thick which makes it really hard to breathe.

As another example, the mitochondria causes a disease called the mitochondrial disease. This happens when the mitochondria fails to do its job. Over time, this causes less and less energy that is being generated in the cell. This can lead to injuries in the cell, and even cell death.

Some organelles (such as a cell wall or chloroplast) are only found in a plant cell. Other organelles (such as lysosomes) are only found in animal cells. Most of the other organelles (such as the cell membrane and the nucleus) are found in both animal and plant cells. Sometimes the same roll is played by different organelles in the different kind of cell. For example, lysosomes are the animal cells "garbage", but in plant cells, the vacuole does the same job as the lysosomes. In an animal cell, the vacuole stores waste and nutrients that the cell can later use.

SP6: Constructing Explanations and designing solutions:

My group and I constructed an explanation of how the cell membrane works with other organelles, and the diseases that it can cause. We constructed our explanations and solutions as we made our script for the video about our chosen organelle. We also learned that there is not just one organelle that is the "best," they all depend on each other to do their jobs.
